Too bad about the 2002 Vatan, that is one of the best Sancerre ever made, IMO.

I remember drinking a fair bit of that in Paris when I was a grad student and it was not even close to 'expensive'. I knew that I was living special moments because the wine was so good and made every setting seem more delightful, but little did I know what would happen to the price. Such is life.

Yeah, I know. $25, those were the days. I wish I had thought of cellaring some 1996...

got some deep diving equipment?

Was that on that boat? Totally forgot about that. 1995 Charvin, too.

Shame you didn't include the 2006 in the tasting - I really like that wine and would've been interested in your comparisons to 2005 and 2011.

Really? The 2006 was one that I didn't think would make bones and drank what few bottles I had quickly. IIRC, 2006 was harder to come by than 2005.

I don't know if it counts as old bones, but I had the 2006 about a year ago and thought it was still nice and fresh. I should dig another one out.

If I had any I would have brought it! Now I am intrigued

Well, if you had included me I would have brought it!

Had two bottles of it in the last year. Excellent.

There is always next time, especially seeing as everyone is a flutter in the DC area now. If only we knew someone in the area with a 2002 that VLM and others are so highly touting.... I hear the drive up from NC is nice in spring :)

May have been SFjoe, although until now I had been confident you were the responsible culprit. Mas La Grillade with SFjoe, Kirk, Chelsea, Sharon, Robert, visiting out of town French guests, and their two young children that (mostly) slept while the adults ate and drank. There were some lovely wines, and then some wines that should have been at least interesting but for being corked ('82 Trollat, 1960s Huet). '02 Vatan was one of the lovely ones.

ah, that, good comrade, was the 2005.
Easy to deduce, since I've never owned a bottle of the 2002, relying on better men and women for that fine vintage.

Wow. I had been thinking it was the 2002 for a couple of years now. I suppose we did have a fair amount of wine that night, so perhaps my memory can be excused. It seems I have never had a good bottle of the 2002, then. Quick! Someone help me fix that!

I'm no better than anyone else, but I have a few bottles left of the 2002.

And more than a few of the 2006, oddly.
