TN: Visit to Salil (March 18, 2014)

While on the road for business, a visit chez Salil in his natural habitat: up to his shins in wine bottles and books on politics/economics.

He's also been doing some weight-lifting so dinner was heavy on the protein (which is fine by me). It's a pleasure to get away from the usual run of hotels and chain restaurants.

And we thought perhaps the two of us could skate by on four wines:

Az Ag Bricco Rocche (Ceretto) 1997 Barolo "Prapo" - open for several days already; a bit soft and a bit spirity but good varietal flavor and not showing much sign of the warm year

Levet 2006 Cote Rotie "La Peroline" - hand-carry, the bottle has Agnes Levet's artwork on it; the wine is initially reticent but it soon shows cool, 'blue' fruit and fine tannins; good now but a whiff of something sauvage suggests it will be better with some more years on it

Clos Rougeard 2007 Saumur-Champigny - normale ("Clos"), suave, silky, perfectly-judged ripeness, leathery, delightful

Haag 2001 Brauneberger Jaffur-Sonnenuhr Riesling Spatlese - 2 577 050 7 02, really fragrant and intense, acidity just a touch soft with flavors of underripe apricot and lime, slight waxiness, still some cooked egg, with a long creamy, savory finish; wow

Thanks, Salil, for hosting a two-person wine dinner.

Good seeing you Jeff. Fun evening, and the three wines we had with dinner (the Barolo was just a leftover item there to taste for interest) were all fantastic.
