Wine Production - Volume Question

Request for help, please. I have a wine production question and general internet research is not turning up anything useful...

When a wine producer say "Average annual production: 1.8 pièce" what does that equate to in liters? Before this instance I have never heard of "pièce" as a unit of measure in terms of volume. Naturally, "piece" makes sense in terms of quantity ("there's 56 pieces on that pallet.").

Many thanks in advance for any help.

Barrique is the word used in Bordeaux for barrel.

Indeed, the volume varies from one region to another because of tradition and long local history of winemaking.

In Bordeaux, a barrique contains 225 liters (60 US gallons).

In Burgundy, it is 228 liters and is called a "piece" while in the Loire Valley it is 232 liters.

Tonneau is another word used for barrel. In Bordeaux a "tonneau" contains 900 liters and means 4 barriques.
