Post here if you agree that the WDYDT thread should stay as it is. Also let us know what you had to drink.

Venturini Baldini Lambrusco Emilia - Surprisingly dry, robust, delicious. With homemade pizza it is great.

I think we should do a really creative thread where people describe what the wines they will open later that day taste like.

And then post what they actually find in the other thread.

It's too much work.

Also we have to consider Jay's ipad.

We could even do a bookmaker jeebus board where people placed bets.

This could really create new dimensions for WD.

Channeling a former disorderly...

what's an IPAd? I like IPA. I like DPA. But I've never tasted an IPAd.

It's when you've drank too much IPA. As in " he was totally IPA'd after his 10th 60 minute pale ale.

I don't know where this belongs, but this thread seems as good as any.
Walked into a state operated retail outlet yesterday. 2010 Talbot $105, 2010 Haut-Bailly $225, etc.
2010 Magdelaine seemed like a bargain at $110 all of a sudden.
I looked around to check if Spock had a beard in this alternate universe.

Tried more IPAs tonight and they just taste like dirty lees from the bottom of the bottom of an off tank of gewürztraminer. It is beyond me. Perhaps there is an IPA gene.

.sasha, sorry about your Bordeaux. But look at it this way, I'll bet all those wines are pushing 14% these days so what are you really missing?

2010 Rhys Horseshoe Chardonnay

I had previously said their 2009 Horseshoe was my favorite of their chards, the 2010 is even better. More precise, more complex tensile fruit, really, really nice. Ross agrees with me that it's their best chard to date and Brad says it's probably the best CA chardonnay he's had.

1974 Sterling Reserve Cabernet

The last of the wines I bought when '70s cab was going for a song, or at most an aria, on Winebid. Stripped bare of all non-essential elements this is quintessential '70s CA cab. Great match with the steak.

1989 La Dominique - served blind I initially guessed 1983 Figeac which I suppose wasn't too far off. IIRC everyone else but Ross was on the left bank. Delicious real Bordeaux.

1999 Peter Michael 'Pavots' - It's not enough I had to suffer through that Colgin, Scarecrow and Outpost earlier this week? This one wasn't terrible until the finish which was thick and goopy.

2012 M. Ollivier 'Briords' - many thanks to Jeff for sacrificing one for us. Amazing wine.

1992 Mayacamas - Very good, vibrant, pure cabernet, still very young. At this point I'll lump Mayacamas in with Dunn Howell Mountain as a 30 year wine.

There were other wines including an amazing 1950 Amontillado. I may get around to posting on them.

IPA gene = lack of bitterness receptors?
Try some scotch or "wee heavy" ales; high malt, low hop style. Kind of the anti-IPA.

or maybe it was two nights ago. i forget.

la clarine mourvedre "cedarville" 2012
pure blackcurrant and blackcurrant leaf. very much like the 2010 vintage except this one had a creamy, dairy texture when first opened (it went away after 2 days). incredibly lively. 14.2% alcohol, but undetectably so. much better chilled. delicious.

ganevat "j'en veux" 2012
pale orangey-red, very mildly funky, strawberries everywhere. kept on getting better. wish i'd had the foresight to save a glass for the next day. also delicious.

markus altenburger, neuburger reserve 2012
on day 1, it was all wood wood wood. then it became much more delicate and honeyed. lean without being bony and unforgiving. slightly bitter in the finish.

graf v. schonborn, riesling spatlese trocken "hallburger schlossberg" 2005
seemed more developed than its vintage would suggest. petrol, but also plenty of papaya and musk melon. and a bit strange: smell of damp wool and wet chalk in the savennieres way AND the perfumeyness of one of those a-bit-too-floral edelzwickers. difficult to parse. but nice with some slightly charred lamb.

julien fremont "pur pom" 2009
a green calvados (i think—certainly very little wood or age). slightly rasping, unctuous in the glass, fresh, warm red apples in the nose, a slow burn on the way down.

越つかの酒造, "梅乃泉", junmai sake umeshu
vinous acidity from ume, a yeasty leesy nose. much lower sugar than is usual for sake, but works because of the rich aromatics from the sake. unusual, very delicious.

with a mixed grill from the kebab shop round the corner:
"i would like two lamb kebab sandwiches please."
"i give you mixed grill and pitta. you make yourself."
