scribble from the cellar

With several guests in town -- notably, Ignacio Villalgordo and Marc Hanes -- there was feverish action in the cellar yesterday. I was, strangely, not in a note-taking mood; anyway, I came late and left early.

So, all I can do is tantalize you:

1996 CFE - suave and fascinating, "You're bleeding before you know you've even been cut" -Marc
2000 CFE - nice wine but a bruiser, big muscles and lots of swagger, bumping into things without meaning to
2002 Huet Sec - almost dead
Couly-Dutheil "Crescendo" - none of us could identify this as Chinon, smelled a bit like dried-up Christmas tree needles
1970 DDC - beautiful
1974 Simi Zin - beautiful
1999 M. Magnien - completely closed
1993 Drouhin "Petits Monts" - lovely
Anthill Pinot Noir - eh

Untasted or unremarked... a champagne, a Jura white, a Brundlmayr that was very good

Perhaps some other participants can jump in here. We all know that Marc Hanes takes notes but his rate of publishing is almost as slow as his rate of consumption. We'll look for the notes in a year or two.

ETA: Another couple came to mind.

is there a more frustrating case of pox than '96 CFE?
Because of an almost unmatched frequency of dead bottles (IME), and amazing quality of the rare good ones.

'93 PM? Wow. Jay's ?

Marc has communicated the list:

2007 Dashe enfant terrible
2004 Larmandier - Bernier vv cramant
1989 prince florent de merode Pommard Clos de la Platiere

ETA: More bottles mentioned below. And "Alpine". And #14.

In re the list, as recognition is so much better than recall, I remember:
- Eminence Road was outstanding, just-so ripeness, clean but not too clean
- Rieussec very good
- Lapierre should have been drunk years ago
- Voge very good but the Clape even better; maybe it's time to dig out the 1996s?
- Jaboulet had no more charm than a bad industrial Cotes-du-Rhone

He didn't mention the '70 DDC that you did, which was a terrific showing and there was a '89 Burg that Jay opened, I believe. I liked the Anthill Pinot more than you did and he doesn't mention that one.

Just recalled that Jay served blindly an older Prince de Merode wine. 1959? Did not see the bottle up closely.

Was the Chevalier 1990 or other vintage? (Another wine served blindly, that seemed to be the theme of the day.) Not 100% sure. Whatever vintage, it was good stuff.

Think that captures all wines opened but probably still missing one or two.

Hm. His list has a '90 DDC which I don't think was there. I'll edit back to '70.

I've had two this year, and neither struck me that way, but I will have to turn to Claude in the confessional to be sure.

Was the 00 Palette Blanc oaky on the palate?

All right, Mr. Oak Man, listen up.

Actually, seriously, I had this debate about Els Jelipins with Arno Tronche, and fortunately we had this debate at the importer tasting two years ago, and said importer (Jenny, of J & F) said that no, there was ca. 15% at the most extremest mostest.

For all of his triumphs, AT seems sometimes to sniff out oak where der ain't none, a subject of interesting conversation.

As for the 00 Simone, it wasn't oaky, but then again, I was drunk.
