Texas Wines

Way back in the 90s a friend who had done a bit of a driving tour of the Hill Country gave me bottle from Sister Creek Vineyards. I think it was some kind of bordeaux blend. Our expectations were very low, I remember being surprised at it being drinkable at all. That said, I also recall it being very generic, I think I had a glass with a burger.

Anyway, you made me curious. Turns out there are a shitwad of 'wineries' in Texas.

I took a trip to Texas in November of 2010 and tried contacting them ahead of time to arrange a visit but received no reply.

I seem to remember that there is a division between some of the wines getting a lot of new oak and others none, with the wines made the two ways having different winery names and labels.

I found one of the wines in a store in Houston (a red but I don't remember which wine or what store). I had a cold that air travel sometimes induces in me and it's been three and a half years... However, my memory is that it tasted like something from Coturri if it had seen a lot of new oak. A description not necessarily a criticism. But it would seem to undermine the idea of terroir in these wines (perhaps Coturri's as well, though I've liked many of those wines but not had them recently).

For whatever any of that is worth.
