Just bought a Linn LP12 and it's everything they say it is.

Totally mint 1980; the shop said it likely had never been opened up. Grace 707 tonearm. Totally dynamic and deep, very engaging. I put an Ortofon 2M Blue on and it's breaking in nicely.

For y'all just spectating, the Linn platter is machined three or four times over the course of a month, to let the metal rest between lathings to get absolute balance and roundness. The bearing the table spins on is made by a firm that primarily makes jet engine bearings. In continuous production (with MAJOR revisions) since 1974. You get the picture. Sort of the Porsche 911 of turntables. Made east of Glasgow.

Brian, you need to get down here for a listen.

I recall the reputation of Linn Sondeks from my audiophile days . Amazing that you found one mint. Was it lost in a warehouse or something?

Ahhh, such memories! AudioAsuylum was where I was first coaxed out of my embryonic enophilic state, where encouraged by that Mr. Dressner fellow, I first attempted to soar to greater and greater heights of wine commentary before, Icarus-like I was brought down to earth by the harsh realities of the journalistic life, having learned all-too-well that having a revered personal brand is all well and good, but it don't mean a thing if it ain't got that jingle-jangle chiming away in the wallet (and I'm not talkin' George L. Carlson's kind of Jingle-Jangle). Yes, those were the salad days (consumed with grüner veltliner in its pre-hipster somm era) and while they're rememberated fondly by many, time moves on.

-Eden (back then I had a Linn LP-12 w/Ittok but I couldn't keep up the payments on the upgrades so I sold it on Audiogon to someone with more stars in their hi-fi eyes than I and got a set of Innersound Eros speakers 'cause their name was kind of sexy and music always sounds better if it's coming out of tall and sexy speakers, kind of like the way Austrian and Alsatian and German wines are sexy because they come out of tall sexy bottles)

that reminds me, i really should try to find my B&O turntable, and then see if it actually hooks up to my system
and those who know me well, know i ain't kidding when i say "find".

Had meant to tell you, you helped springboard my (early and still naïve) wine pursuits (encouraged, deepened, and indulged on this bored) to intro hifi. Ended up with an Advent 300 driving a couple of ADS L500s, with an AR-XA at the helm (the LP-12's progenitor). Thanks!

I have *seen* Audio Asylum. Physically, not virtually.

Story is, last summer I dug up my old California Audio Labs Icon CD player in the garage, only to find it was dead and that the manufacturer had been out of business for some time. Their website has been taken over by *the* authorized repair service establishment, so specialized apparently that the first customer review listed was from a fellow with a CAL CD player in New Zealand! But just as I am about to throw the player in the trash, I notice the place is but 20 miles from my house. No shit, eh?

Wow. Bunch of guys from Another Time, boyar beards, high voltage resistant faces, audio geekdom supreme. No walls that you could see here - narrow passages through stacks of all imaginable amps from floor to ceiling on every side. The setup reminded me of a wine locker I share with a disorderly and a lurker these days.

That is a great classic system. The Advent 300 is such a great unit. I've had several - using one right now in our kitchen with some Canton speakers (not too far from those ADS's). I've always wanted to check out the phono section. And hard to beat the AR! That is really cool.

It's funny, I had one too and it was dead as well. But I never found out about the dudes.

That must be a not uncommon circumstance. Years ago, after I blew the bass cones on my Dahlquist DQ10a speakers, I went in search of service. As in your story, the company no longer existed, but a number of ex-employees had set up a service company near to their original location in Hauppage. Not being proximate to there, I had to ship my speakers off for repair and reconditioning, but I have few doubts that a similar scene would have presented itself had I stopped by in person.

Lets do it. Been busy up here as you can probably imagine...

Is there any place in NYC that sells vintage audio equipment? I can't seem to find one.

Any advice on McIntosh tube amps for a vinyl only system.

All other suggestions welcome on building a vinyl only system from scratch and I know price is a big variable.

Oh God, do you realize how exciting this is?
