And you can boast to your guests that the components were vinified separately.

"Most wines are already blended, with even those labelled as a single grape only requiring 85 per cent to be the named variety."

Is she referring to red burgundy, I wonder?

This is, of course, a ridiculous marketing gambit. But it reminds me of a friend. He loves wine and for many years had the means to buy much of what he liked. He fell on hard times and couldn't afford what he used to buy. Even a $10 bottle became a threat to his budget. Still, to amuse himself, he'd buy close-out stuff sold through a place called Grocery Outlet. He'd taste, figure out how wines might work as components, and then try various blends. He was under no illusion that the Grenache blend he mixed up was suddenly Vieux Telegraphe, but I thought it was a touching way to stay connected to wine. He still has some nice wines in his cellar, too, but he rations those out, so they'll last him.

That's a great story.

One night, at a small dinner gathering in DC to which Joe D. had brought Eric Texier, i watched in fascination as Cole blended some asphalt- stinky Coche Meursault (1998 or 1997 I think) with some flabby Donnhoff spatlese (2000 i think but no idea which cru) and produced a drink significantly better than the sum of its parts.
