Potel, Volnay 'Santenots', 1999

MarkS

Mark Svereika
A dark cherry liqueur along with underbrush elements on the nose. Very structured, wood still evident, cherry and blackberry stems with an aggressive finish. To be admired more for its structure and dominance than charm. Alright, but I might have been looking for something a little less than that boy with the cigarette hanging from his mouth by the fence and something more like that sweet neighbor girl you always said hello to on the bus. I doubt more time will change its character. B+

Not sure what you're going for here, but sorry to hear that it wasn't ideal. Have you drunk other bottles in the past?

The only Potel wine I have followed in any depth was the 02 Volnay Clos des Chenes. At times it was great seductive fun and at other times it was either soft or aggressive or something unpleasant. That said, I suppose such irregularity is not limited to Potel in Volnay!

I think that's the terroir of Santenots showing -- your description of the wine itself fits Santenots. Although people have a monolithic idea(l) of what Volnay should be like, in fact, the terroirs are quite diverse.

Santenots is indeed a tough old vineyard, I can't think of any good example that requires less than 20 years in a strong vintage to be even approachable and the Potel style is not for facile wines. Not to mention that 99 is not off the starting block. A superb 99 Drouhin Musigny was still bright purple and entirely primary last week.

What is the Potel style? I've been puzzling over a 2005 aoc Volnay I opened a year ago, trying to decide whether to open a Beaune Greves.

Wasn't 2005 potel not potel anymore?

He left in early 2009.

Jay -- I don't see any Domaine de Bellène entries prior to 2007 on Cellartracker. Based on when I met with Nicolas about that time (i.e., late 2007, 2008), I think he saw the end coming, and so I surmise that he held some or all of his own properties' wines back for his new operation (which, IRRC, had begun before he left the Nicolas Potel/Cottin operation).

What you see on Cellartracker for 2005 and before are Maison Roche de Bellène wines -- these are negociant wines, and Nicolas has been quite active in seeking out older wines in bottle to present under the Maison Roche de Bellène label.
