and at the chambres d'hotes i'm staying at the red grape of burgundy is syrah. 100 years ago she would almost have been correct--it's just that the syrah didn't get to alsace until it was wine. . .

this morning having my first breakfast in france staying in katzenburg the woman running the place struck up conversation and when she found out i was in the wine bidness she started extolling the virtues of alsace and was bragging about how alsace has more grape varieties than bordeaux or burgundy and was trying to remember which grapes were planted where. when i said that the red grape of burgundy was pinot noir she corrected me and said that it was syrah. i pleasantly suggested that it was actually really was syrah--and i thought she was going to take my corn flakes away.
