Rouge Tomate on the Move

Moving

ROUGE TOMATE
This elegant and sprawling restaurant, which emphasizes healthy and sustainable ingredients, will close in August to relocate downtown by the end of the year, a move forced by economics. Much of the menu will be the same; wines and cocktails will expand: 10 East 60th Street, 646-237-8977, rougetomatenyc.com.

The place on 60th is enormous.

But what about my needs? Where will I get a decent glass of wine in that neighborhood now? Where will I take clients?

Given I work 2 blocks from Rouge and frequent it often this is very sad.

However I am surprised they made it work this long because their rent must be insane, despite it is always packed.

The good news in the article is that wine program will expand!

Le Veau d'Or

I love Le Veau d'Or. Kathy is great, although not Robert, but it's old-school fun hanging out with some of the people who have been coming since the 50s or 60s. Terrible wine list, but when you get to know Kathy she'll let you BYO....

Exactly. It seems so incongruous on E 60th Street, it's a shame to move it.

My parents used to take me to Le Veau d'Or back in the late 60s/early 70s...is the sleeping calf painting still on the wall (le veau dort)?

One feels your pain; I actually happen to have a dear friend I can only have a drink with in quick skipping distance from Grand Central.

Má Pêche is doing some nice work these days (keep it on the down low, fellas).

They don't have quite the depth of chenin that one loses with the departure of RT, but yes, Jordan might be part of the solution.

No, not the full chenin panoply, but recently I was excited by the offerings; well enough (and well-priced enough) for an evening that doesn't go until 2am.

Plus, tasty food.

Not that one will not weep the absence of Pascaline in that part of the world.

The other two options in the "neighborhood" are Betony and the bar at Marea but they are a bit of a hike across town.

Raj also has some reasonably priced choices on the list at Daniel, so the Bar room is another option.

NOTHING has changed....

Including the old school hospitality. If you went more than once you were a regular. I had the pleasure of spending several long lunches either sheltering from a snowstorm or cowering from a July heatwave. The wine list (never updated and never anything available on it anyway) is terrible but it didn't matter. Order the Parfait Au Rhum for dessert and they'll leave the bottle of rum on the table for you imbibe the afternoon away.

I've been going for years with 2 people, one of whom has been going since the 80s, the other the 50s. Many years ago, shortly after the sorely missed Robert got to know me, we had finished lunch and were smoking cigars and cigarettes (long after the ban was in place) when I asked our host for another martini. "Eh, make it yourself" was the smiling, Gallic reply made right before I did just that.
