So much thunder

There are loud exploding noises outside.

Is anyone self-medicating to avoid PTSD symptoms?

Along, perhaps, with some grilled meats?

I can claim an interesting Finger Lakes Forge 2013 Rosé and 2012 Dashe Cellars Enfants Terribles Grenache.

Away with ye, O bursting bombs.

Happy 4th.

Forth, now.

Meats were grilled, bombs are bursting as I write. 07 Bea San Valentino was the quaff, young though it be.

Happy 238th, Republican ideals!

Meats were grilled, bombs burst a while ago (...back in the East River, where they belong!).

Dom. Lucien Joudelat 2003 Irancy "Les Mazelots" - a gift, hand-carried to us from the domaine; I carafed it for 2 hrs about 3.5 hrs before dinner; at first, very tight and tannic; by meal time it was showing only a tiny bit more fruit but there was a (somewhat orphaned) violet or floral note; "rustic" is a good word for this wine; not much by itself but it stood up to grilled meats well enough.

Well, they said there, that their intention was to make a lighter, fruit forward grenache. I thought they succeeded and I thought that was like Richaud's Cairanne (but not their Ebrescade). You may disagree either that they succeeded or that Richaud is like that, of course.

Nice coincidence; that was our red last night as well; really nice with Barbuto's roast chicken and grilled skirt steak. (But on the westside there were no explosion noises.)

I don't find Richaud's Cairanne a light expression of grenache; to me it's very structured and made complex and non-varietal by the other grapes (it's only 45%-47% grenache, with the balance a mix of (in %age order) mourvèdre, syrah, carignan and counoise).

But while we're on the topic of Mike Dashe's delightful grenaches, I have to say that I particularly enjoy his Grenache Blanc as well. Quite a thrill to discover that a few months ago.

i sit nursing coffee wishing i hadnt opened all these last night to celebrate but i did.

breton la ritournelle, bourgueil rose. dry, crisp, quite nice.

janvier jasnieres cuvee silex 2013. i always intend to lay a couple down but cant keep my mitts off them.

equipo navazos "florpower" 44, despite the silly name this wine is fascinating.

2012 guillemot bourgogne rouge. infanticide.

all with steamed lobster. grilled meats today.

have not had dashe's grenach blanc but enjoy all his zins and grenache.

Mark and Kirk, I thought these 07 San Valentino's would be untouchable for another five years. Though your comments about the actual wine were scant, I take it that opening one to see for myself is in order?

as Mark says, it tastes young, but in no way closed or unpleasant. it is a generous, fruity (but not frooty) wine; no doubt more time will give it more complexity, but it had enough and was very pleasant company last night.

i'm getting old.

Had a nice view of the newly returned liberty park fireworks and even a surprisingly decent view of the east river ones. We could never see the ones on the Hudson.

Maybe well have a fourth of July party next year. As it is we ate in chinatown.

What Kirk said. Still very primary, but the tannins aren't harsh. It'll no doubt be better in 5 years, but it went just fine with our grilled ribeyes.

Pascal Potaire Les Capriades Piege a Filles Rose - Leave your keys in the bowl by the door. Lovely red fruit and a little bit o green, wonderful. Out of magnum.

Karim Vionnet Vin de Kav Chiroubles 2011 - glou glou glory.

Tissot Cremant de Jura Brut - Precise and elegant, but at the same time really giving. Just an amazing wine, always.

Domaine des Bodines Arbois Poulsard 2011 - Light background tannins, red fruit but just a touch. Lovely balance.

Marc Deschamps Les Champs de Cri Pouilly-Fume 2010 - Magnum. I have liked this producer in the past, but this seemed over-ripe and uninteresting.

Venus La Universal Montsant Dido 2011 - A bit oaky for me, but of this style very nice. I'd like to taste it in a few years.

Arpepe Stella Retica Riserva Sassella Valtellina Superiore 2006 - Good stuff, some structure but not too much. Really tastes like classic Nebbiolo, some nice rustiness.

2006 Charles Schleret Sylvaner. A bit oxidative, but miraculously well-preserved on the whole. Great with bratwursts and homemade sauerkraut laden with speck.
