Twice Too Round

2006 Claude Branger Muscadet Terroirs Les Gras Moutons
Round salty fat Muscadet. Not terribly dense or heavy and still light enough on its feet to be recognizable in the category. But a bit too round for my liking.

2007 Vollenweider Wolfer Goldgrube Riesling Sptlese
Round and sweet. And given the whole package it is a bit too round for my liking. It does pick up a bit of definition with air and who knows maybe even more to come in the future? But not very much breed or complexity so I guess/hope I need to open the 07 Portz to find that.

Personally, I think opening the Portz would be a mistake, and I thought opening a Spatlese when I opened it was a mistake as well. If you want to drink one now, have a Kabinett, it's downright delicious.

What's the problem with roundness?

Must a wine be all elbows and knuckles and sharp angles? Real wines have curves!

Stop the hate!

Maureen tried to convince me of this as well but I'm not so sure. I haven't tasted many 07s yet but generally I don't find it terribly difficult to taste German rieslings at this stage, especially those in a 'generous' style like this Vollenweider. And I didn't think this was a bad wine. It just didn't convince me. Sure it will get slimmer as it ages but I didn't sense that it had a lot of magic to go along with that.

Of course I could easily be completely wrong :)

Unfortunately I didn't buy any kabinett :)

Real wines have elbows, knuckles, curves, and many other components.

A one-note show does not a body/wine make!

Look, if you fail to listen to Maureen, we can't be held responsible for the consequences. But you'll learn, eventually. There's plenty of time.

Our notes for the Branger are nearly identical, just with differing final evaluations. You should have listened to me and saved yourself the discomfort of roundness.
