Beurer Help

Thanks to all the Beurer love around here, I decided to get over my (most likely unrepresentative) negative experiences with 03 Junges Schwaben Riesling and buy some more recent vintages.

The 2012 Stettener Riesling Gipskeuper was easy, a no-brainer of delicious juicy clear freshness that had me convinced from the first sip. Buy more.

But I'm having a lot more trouble with the 2009 Riesling Junges Schwaben. All kinds of rich, savory, and tactile elements and flavors that are not what I would expect from riesling (of course that's more about my expectations than the wine, I know). But that stuff is interesting.

The confusing part is how disjointed and out of sorts the wine feels, getting a bit better on the second day but still on the cranky side. Is that a stage? Should I expect more harmony in the future? Or is this just a curious wine/vintage? (I note that my two unsatisfactory experiences with Junges Schwaben are very ripe vintages)

The 09 JS was a lot more focused when it first came into the warehouse but lately it's been a little blurry, so I'm not bothering to open one for a while. I'd stick to the 10s and 12s (the Kieselsandstein in 10 was my favorite, I think fb might prefer the Gipskeuper) to get a sense of what he's really doing over there (The 13 Trocken that just arrived is also something else, pure cut and minerals).

But I sell the wines so fuck my opinion, ask .sasha.

unless the wine has gotten cranky all of a sudden, this sounds damaged. the fatsink drank a shitload of heat trashed wine in berlin last summer, including beurer junges schwaben and koch reserve pinot.

there's too much fucking heat damaged wine in london, berlin and paris. it's about time teh locals wised up to the age of new agricultural practices.

usually bottom of teh pile for me. too tame. hans t. volk, otoh, loves it.

best to drink now are 13s (& 12s) while they are still singing their youthful song, or else 08 j.s. & earlier (i think the 10 is shutting down a tad as well) and 09 kiesel (ditto on the 10) and 09 and 11 schilf & earlier (ditto on 10). 11 & 10 gips are nice too.

Interesting diagnosis. My Beurer source is Wein & Glas, which seems like a serious place, but I don't have details or first-hand knowledge on storage.

And nice to see that the wines are imported. I thought I was going to have to drink/buy everything before returning to the States! (And unfortunately I'm not seeing his '13s yet, at least at the above-mentioned source)

The 13 basic was just released to us alongside the 12 crus. If you can find it try a bottle of the 2010 JS and it should show a lot of the same minerality that the 09 has, vintage differences aside. If not you just have an off bottle.

We need to work on this with the locals.

fatboy and I picked off the 09 JS off a list in Stuttgart in 2013, and the thing I remember the most was my initial surprise over palate impact - based on smelling I expected a riper, heavier finish, but it was fresh, elegant, even tensile

I am planning to drink a bit of Beurer this summer, just to keep this thread alive
