What else could I do, living 1000 mi away from either coast, and being at best tangentially involved? I know that you would have told me that it was: a) way too young and b) not really the best expression of the grape, but it was what was ready tonight so fuck it. Was there really so much fuss made about this? The acidity was there, the honeyed goodness and a fair sense of richness. Lean? Not that I can tell. No lack of fruit, either. Perhaps my view is colored by my desire to reconnect, however flimsily, with you, O Captain. Jean and I shared a toast to you, and recalled some of our fonder memories of you. More tears were shed.

When the time is right, I'll pop a Moelleux, the better to serve your memory; for now, though, this will do, as much as it can, until we can think of a better way to salve our wounds and move on.

We never got round to it.

So, so numb.

Just last night I realized that the next time I saw him I was going to ask if he had ever read a particular PG Wodehouse short story and loan it to him if he hadn't. I hope he did.

Participated in a small (ok, 8 people) wine dinner organized by someone else in a restaurant last night. Although I'd planned this course with my friend Amy a few weeks ago, it seemed a remarkable coincidence that the two best wines of the night were the 2008 Le Mont Demi-Sec and the 2008 Le Haut-Lieu Demi-Sec that Amy and I brought, respectively, from our cellars. The Le Haut-Lieu was a bit more woolly initially on the nose, the Le Mont pure fruit and a with a very slightly sweeter palate impression - and both fabulous. I used the occasion to provide a toast to Joe and make sure those gathered got a bit of an understanding of just what a terrific man he was.
