An Ode to SFJoe

Listening to Piano Man on the drive home last night brought out the tears once again. So with no apologies to the songwriters, an alternative version based on get-togethers at her place on the deck:

Grilling Man

It's three o'clock on a Saturday
the regular crowd trickles in
There's a good man standing next to him
Makin' swirls with his romarantin
He says, Joe can you grill me a porcini
I'm not really sure if it goes
But it's fat and it's sweet and I picked it complete
When I wore a forager's clothes

La la la de de da
la la lade da da dum

Chorus:
Pull us a cork, you're the grilling man
Feed us some pork tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for some levity
And you've got us feelin' alright

With Joe at the grill, stay behind the line
While he pours a rare grüve
And he's quick with a joke or to wave off the smoke
But there's noplace that he'd rather be
He says, Well, all this fine food is filling me
As the smile spreads across his face
I'm sure that I could be a winegrowing star
If I could just take Joly’s place!

Oh, la la la de de da
la la de de da da dum

There’s one or two New York Times columnists
Admiring the chop of his knife
And he's gathered the bankers who aren’t the wankers
And will be his good friends for life

And there’s mole pairing the chicken drumsticks
As the ribs get eaten off the bone
Yes, they're sharing a drink they call demisec
And it's better than drinking alone

Chorus:
Pull us a cork, you're the grilling man
Feed us some pork tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for festivity
And you've got us feelin' alright

It's a large happy crowd for a Saturday,
And the manager gives me a smile
'Cause she knows that it's he they've been coming to see
To celebrate life for awhile
And the party sounds like a carnival
As the drained bottles swell up o’er the years
And he stands at the bar and puts Bourg in my jar
And says "Man, I am so glad you’re here!"

La la la de de da
la la de de da da dum

Chorus:
Pull us a cork, you're the grilling man
Feed us some pork tonight
Well, we're all in the mood for some therapy
And you've got us feelin' alright

Very nice, Erik. I'm trying to remember, but I think one of the first, if not the first dinner I had at Joe's place was when you were in town and I think you brought an '85 Bricco dell' Uccellone, if I recall correctly? Do you recall when that was? I'm thinking maybe late '98 or early '99?

Brad, you have an amazing memory, that was the very bottle!

It would have had to have been a bit earlier than that, as in mid-98 I did the "reverse SFJoe" (i.e., I left Wall St in NYC for a pharma company in California). Joe moved to NYC in '96 I believe, so '97 or '98?
