Not so suddenly - Des Moines and Kansas City

I have to be in Des Moines next month and the timing is such that I'll arrive late afternoon but not have business until the next morning - anyone have a dining recommendation? I'll be at the downtown Marriot, wherever that is.

And just before then, I'm meeting my sister at MCI and we are spending one night in KC before heading up to St Joe for a memorial service for my father. We've not yet planned where we're staying - I figured I'd first find where we want to dine and then make it convenient. We plan to hit the namesake museum and probably the Kemper too before driving up to st joe Saturday. I don't think corkage is a possibility so if anyone knows of a place with a european, if not disorderly, list, I'd appreciate the tip.

A friend said the best he found in Des Moines is:

His recommendation noted that the bar and wine list was above average. (don't expect Truchot!)

I can't help much in Des Moines but the closest you will find to a disorderly list in KC is at Tannin Wine Bar. Barry Tunnel is a good customer of ours. Ça Va for bubbles under Jim Coley too. Port Fonda, next door, for great Mexican Food. It has been a slow uphill climb in Missouri but a few good people there are leading the charge.

My condolences.
I ate at Centro in Des Moines about six years ago and enjoyed it. The wine list was uninspired. Mostly Napa and Sonoma with some Italian wines. The food was quite nice and it's a couple of blocks from the Marriott.

Thanks for all the kind words. My dad left us early may. But he went well. He moved to birmingham (my late mother's home town) about 3.5 years ago and had a blast. My mother's siblings and their spouses and several of their kids live there and they took good care of him. He had a girlfriend to tke to dinner and the movies and took advantage of Birmingham's cultural offerings (hey beats st joseph missouri - at least opera in movie theaters and definitely better restaurants - remember i was drinking Puffeney arbois there last spring). He never felt too crappy, he went out for a beer with my nephew a few days before he died, and he went in his sleep. He was a very sweet and funny man and had tons of friends of all ages who made him very welcome in his new home town. He loved his kids and knew they loved him so all in all , not too bad.

FYI, Arnold and I will be passing through Des Moines some time next month to pick up zippy from her vacation. She was having a passionate affair with a stud named Tripper.

It's barely possible our timing will intersect.

He was cagey about using his full name.

When are you there Jay? And who is zippy?
Zippy (Finch's Zip In Her Step) is our pomeranian.

We're won't figure out the day until Arnold gets back from Manila at the end of the month and checks his schedule.

On flight to des moines now - dining with colleagues at Louie's Wine Dive. KC ended up not to be except for lunch at 39Q, a pretty good BBQ place. St Joe is the pits for dining.

Meanwhile we're growing more and more skeptical that Zippy took. If so, it's probably only one puppy. I'm taking her for an ultrasound tomorrow.
