Well things have been pretty grim of late. The loss of a well loved, respected and admired comrade, an earthquake, the stabbing of a 72 year old friend of my spouse outside the Berkeley Zen Center, and assorted crappy global events.

As I finish my holiday dessert of apples and honey after dinner and a bottle of 2012 Clos de la Roilette, I feel compelled to say thank you to all of the folks who post on this board. I am reminded of Joe Dressner's comments about having a community of friends before one is in need, as opposed to after a crisis occurs. Here's to a healthy and prosperous new year.

Happy new year to all! May it be better than the last!

My new year got off to a good start by attending a naming ceremony for my cousins's new granddaughter. They named her after my mother.

I agree, Brad. The past few months have been especially sucky. Let's hope for a better New Year. And congratulations, Jay!
