La Fête du Champagne

Peter Liem put together a phenomenal tasting of champagne in New York yesterday.

Too many impressions to note all; the thing that leapt out most for me was just how good what Raphaël Bérêche is doing right now is.

It was also interesting to taste two 100% pinot meuniers from the same vintage from Alexandre Chartogne of Chartogne-Taillet. One was from franc de pied vines and the other, grafted. Illuminating.

Interestingly that was my main take away from the Pinot Meunier seminar as well.

Sharon, please share your thoughts.

I agree, the grand tasting was an incredible event. Selosse, Prevost, Savart, Larmandier-Bernier, and Chartogne-Taillet were the real standouts for me.

I agree, it was a very interesting comparison. I preferred the intensity and cut from the grafted plot (Alliees), although wine from the own-rooted vines (Barres) was excellent in its own, lighter way. Also, I think the Barres was an '09 while the Alliees was an '08... perhaps that skews the comparison a bit.

'09 Barres is not at the same level as '07 or '08, IMO.
I can't compare it to Alliees however as I've never seen or tasted a bottle.
