I'll be in Hamburg for a couple of days at the end of next month. Does the hivemind have any suggestions on the food or wine front?

German wine? any wine?
what kind of food? price point?
 
I'll be there for three days with friends who tend to like to chase Michelin stars, so any insights on the fine dining scene would be appreciated. Are Jacobs or Seven Seas worth hunting down reservations?

Alternately, is there anyplace with a menu specializing in game or wildfowl? I lived in Bielefeld for a couple of years when I was a teenager and have strong memories of eating that food in fall.

I'd also like to find someplace casual with a good German wine list. The option of walking in and working through a few interesting bottles without sitting through a whole meal would be a plus, be that a wine bar or variation.

I have not been much lately, but many of my friends still live in HH, so this is parts own experience, parts what friends (who like similar things I like) have been recommending recently. Overall HH is not the most exciting food and wine place.

For fine dining these days Haerlin in the Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten is the clear favorite among anybody I know. Jacobs or Seven Seas do not get much love anymore.

"Wild" will be on many menus. Usually Landhaus Scherrer has good options in that category but you might want to call and ask. You need to be aware though that this was a very famous ** restaurant in the eighties and not much has changed (incl the quite hideous, though almost cool again, decor and most of the customers). Very traditional food, usually very solid cooking and a large wine list (online). Also rightly famous for their old school roasted duck. I like it once in a while, but some people hate it.

A new place I have not yet been to is OFF Club, which seems to be the latest attempt at bringing Williamsburg to HH. But both food and wine are supposedly very good at fair prices.

With regards to wine bars I need to ask a friend who has a very disorderly taste. Unless something has really changed very recently this is not a strong side of the city.

http://poletto-winebar.de is not bad, mostly Italian and German wines and the owner really knows his stuff (not so sure about most of the guests though).

Thanks, Georg - this is a very helpful start. Any additional insights on the winebar front would be appreciated. I notice that Landhaus Scherrer has more causal options that may satisfy my "wild' jones.

Very hard to get a bead on "Off Club" though. The website gives me a Mike-Myers-in-Hamburg vibe.
