How about Riesling as an aperitif?

This has been a useful dialogue.

Based on the conversation, I have decided to forgo the "L'Aventure Vineuse" as it seems to be more of a distraction than anything, even with it being a rare wine experience.

I am leaning toward offering both the Condrieu and Riesling during the reception...not sure which to pour first, probably the Riesling I would think.

You can tell your guests that Riesling is simply the Champagne of Germany, except there are no bubbles, only sponti.

I agree, Bill. Nothing wrong with Lauer Sekt. '91 Reserve, ideally. But even the current release of the regular would be a treat.
 
Bill and Kirk, Thanks...a sparkling Riesling sounds intriguing as I can't recall ever having had (or even seen?) one.

At this point, I'm committed to wines on hand, but the idea is worthy of remembering for future events.

Don't you think most of these are too sweet? The majority of current Kabinetts are more like what used to be Spaetlese or higher 20 years ago and for me that kills the appetite right away (when young).
 
07 is young for a good MSR, especially Prum. Also, the sweetness recedes and integrates very beautifully in older SLs and ALs, if you can find one - part of what can make these wines great.

I'd think some sweetness if fine in an aperitif, but if you're averse, Sekt would be preferable to young Kabinett, imho. Why not try some of each, and gauge your guests' reactions?

Seeing the 07 WS on a list last night (too expensive, but it was for research purposes) I had to try. It really was quite lovely and even a bit richer than I would have expected. I would not hesitate (presuming you opened it long enough in advance) to serve it.
 
Cole, thanks, that is good data and serves as a reinforcement of my decision to open one of the Prums.

At this point I'm leaning toward the Joh Jos Prum Bernkasteler Badstube Spatlese Riesling '07 thinking it might be a bit more ready than its sibling.
