VENUE AND CULINARY DELIGHTS

WINES

Curious...an acclaimed Viognier and a Grand Cru Corton Charlemagne from a better than reputed vintage for many bottlings...why do you feel they should they be awful?

09 was too warm, and Guigal is spoofy. I do not know that wine but it doesn't bode well.

I see now that I misread the Corton a bit; I thought it was rouge. Anyway, Senard is only so-so.

So, is that sufficient prejudice to get an opinion on the wines outta ya?

Thanks, I now feel better. I thought maybe you knew something the rest of us didn't.

Philippe Senard is a fine, highly regarded producer.

I'll find time to organize my thoughts on the wines.

WINES:

Joh Jos Prum Bernkasteler Badstube Riesling Spatlese '07 -- Medium golden, citrus/apple/peach notes, some flowers and petrol, medium acid backbone, lovely mouthfeel, elegance/balance/harmony, delicious. [E]

E Guigal Condrieu '09 -- Clear medium yellow, aromatic, lovely fruits, apples/peaches, some flowers, full and round profile with ample acidity, mild oak/vanilla notes, nothing not to like. [E]

Comte Senard Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru '04 -- Medium yellow, slight volatile acidity, dry fruits, hints of madeirization that seemed to abate, good complexity, light structure, atypical bottle. [NR]

Chateau de Beaucastel Chateauneuf-du-Pape '89 -- Medium dark red, voluptuous bouquet, leather, dark fruits, light gaminess, exquisite and even finesseful, both silkiness and velvet, beautiful complexity, terrific showing of this wonderful bottling. [O]

Chateau Haut-Brion '89 -- Dark red, blackberry fruits, complex aromatics, deep and captivating, nimbleness belies its strength and resiliency, nicely complex, quite refined and fresh, solid core of fruit, tannins largely in abeyance, gained appeal in the glass (if that's possible). [O]

Domaine Armand Rousseau Pere et Fils Chambertin Clos de Beze '85 -- Initially medium red that seemed to get darker, impressive red fruits, classic Burgundy bouquet, still good body, all components viable, soft fruits offset integrated tannins, some silkiness to texture, delicious treat. [E - O]

Les Clos de Paulilles Banyuls Rimage '00 -- Dark inky, complex fruits, smooth bouquet, maybe some cinnamon, good weight and flavors, chewy almost thick texture that's not cloying, alcohol in abeyance, good complexity and balance, good appeal that makes one want more. [E]

Cognitive disconnect?

Mark, To be fair, I'll say that I'm a little surprised as you are usually more exact.

You left off the adjective "mild".

Like you apparently are, I'm often not a fan of oak treatments but if I can judge SOME (but not all) wines to have "mild" oak treatment, then these special cases will work in my judgement. Such is the case with this viognier which I have always appreciated as a good, food-friendly wine. It went nicely with the smoked trout pate served during the reception and was favorably received by our wine friends (who don't mince words).
