The Best Wine Shop In The World™ hosted a little dinner at Racines to thank the authors of the submissions that won them the title from Jancis. Alas, only some of our number could be present in Tribeca that evening.

JW and DL each held court at opposite ends of the table. Stories, new and old, were recounted... looking for undiscovered makers in the Jura, quirks of the oeno-famous, fortuitous food-wine pairings, even a couple Dressner tales (including "tout le monde au balcon").

The menu included several plates, of note was an outstanding chunky cut of roast cod served on a bed of leek(?) risotto, and some deliciously rare hanger steak.

A few well-chosen bottles also graced the table:

I started with a glass of Bow and Arrow 2012 Rhinestones - pinot noir and gamay, bright, more substantial than I was expecting

Pinon 2004 Vouvray Brut Petillant - from magnum; perfect; delicious; crisp, yellow-fruited but not frooty; ten years is but a nuance on the nose

Pernot 2004 Batard-Montrachet GC - I'm not a white burgundy fan but this was also very good, minerally, the barest hint of tropical sweetness, complex and intriguing

Dom. Pepiere 2013 Muscadet "Clos des Briords" - the texture is a trifle thinner than the 2012 but still great wine, how could we meet without one?

Oddero 1989 Barolo "Vigna Rionda" - from magnum; decanted 6 hours ahead; nose is a little funky but deepens as you breathe it in; the palate is meaty and slightly compote-y on entry but it sorts itself out in a few moments: vivid mixed-fruit flavors suavely held together by medium-heavy texture, too young yet for tertiary flavors, intensely present

Florio NV Dry Marsala - received in a case with wines from the 1930s so one assumes this is of similar vintage; hides its 18% alcohol very well (the fill was well up into the neck so no evaporation assist), gently sweet, tastes of brown sugar and almost no oxidized twang, not a complicated drink but soothing

You're welcome.
