Best place to drink?

Let's remember that this is what they are drinking during their working day while they are in session. I'm sure they have their own cellars at home. I don't know how long Lords is in session since they don't have much to do, but I'll bet it's an impressive number of bottles per working hour, if working is what you call it.

According to Wikipedia, there are 791 active Lords. They get no salary, but expenses are covered. I can't see how many days the HoL is in session.

Drunk as a Lord.

Weird that they quote Dostoyevksy. I'd put a couple of nickels on he didn't write that in English.

Or in 2004.

Yes, it's surely from some recent translation. But the expression is also much older than their earliest date. I just read it today in a Trollope novel from the 1880s and, in context, the phrase was already proverbial. And now that I think about it, there's another incidence in a Purcell opera, which pushes the date back to the second half of the 17th century.
