What did we drink last night...

1991 Peter Lauer Saar Riesling Sekt Brut 11.10%
Oddly closed, without the usual delicate expression. Something wrong with this bottle, but couldn’t put my finger on it. Just kind of awol, though balanced enough; two weeks ago, another of the same was very different (and excellent).

1990 Peter Lauer Saar Riesling Sekt Brut 11.5% disgorged 10/2012
Now we're talking. Sensational aroma, exuberant without being carnivalesque; beautiful mouth, perfect balance. WOTN among the whites.

2002 Luneau-Papin L d'Or Muscadet Sèvre et Maine 12.0%
Charming jasmine & minerality. Mouth a bit opulent, lacked acidity.

2002 Domaine de Montille Pommard 1er Cru Les Grands Épenots 12.0%
Delicate aroma, almost shy, with strawberry Jell-O, spices and a little oak. Balanced, ideal weight and alcohol. Excellent, but low complexity at this point.

2002 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Champans 12.0%
More expressive and multilayered, with light barnyard, just right for a city boy. Sensational mouth, delicacy, harmony, multiplicity; ethereal, yet generous. WOTN among the reds, one of the loveliest Burgundies of recent times.

2002 Domaine de Montille Volnay 1er Cru Les Mitans 12.0%
Also expressive and multiple, but regal and restrained compared to the Champans. Greater sense of structure, with some tannin afoot. Less delicate, pushed by higher acidity. Showing balance, but may need a few more years to reach the Champans's level of readiness.

1997 Weingut Heribert Boch Trittenheimer Altärchen Riesling Spätlese 8.5%
Not sweet enough for the role of dessert wine, but otherwise very good, with excellent acid/sweet balance, good aromatics. Excellent QPR from the Savio Soares stable.

Poor Stephen had to endure endless fire jokes. It was actually very bad; although, once the food and wine came it did not interfere.

Jay and Sasha did you guys record what we drank?

I think I have a partial list; can you amend?

But first, what a job by Aldo Sohm. Timing, order of bottles, identifying anything that wasn't showing right on the spot, matching with the food, you name it. Major respect.

Almost positive that was 2012. The vines are 60 year old vines that were grafted from Sylvaner to Pinot.

Wow! Sasha you are amazing. My head was spinning by flight three. You are spot on about Aldo and Michele from Brooklyn. Also Raj was orchestrated quite a bit behind the scenes.

1964 Egon Müller Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Auslese - simply fantastic, Egon said it was the best showing ever for the wine.

1966 Egon Müller Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Auslese - birth year wine for me and I liked it more than Egon and others.

1969 Egon Müller Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Auslese - on any other night it most likely would have show better but 3rd in the 64, 66, 69 line up

1971 le Gallais Wiltinger Braune - extremely beautiful wine

1985 Egon Müller Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Spätlese - Loved this wine, had a green Grüner like streak that is a flaw but I thought it gave it character. Egon clearly stated he did not like the wine.

1990 Egon Müller Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Kabinett - did not spend as much time as this as I would have liked.

1991 JB Beck Wallufer Walkenberg - Biggest surprise of the night. Awesome wine. Even though it was labeled Auslese it tasted dry and the alcohol was listed at 11.5

1994 Egon Müller Scharzhof Scharzhofberger Kabinett - had this on Friday as well, it was brought selected for the Friday dinner by Egon because he thought it was showing really well and he was right. Definitely the best Kabinett of the weekend.

2006 Van Volxem 1900 - this was a very small production wine where the winemaking was intended to be mimic winemaking styles of 100 years ago hence the 1900 name. Deep orange color veering somewhere between a BA type wine combined with some orange wine characters. It was cool to pour it for Roman. I was bummed I did not see Egon's reaction to tasting it.

2012 Keller Scheurebe - Klaus Peter Keller brought this for me and WOW it did not disappoint. Had it late in the night and it was a a much needed JOLT to my palate.

I have also seem some variability in the 91 and yes I agree the 90 is stunning!

I somehow managed to lose my list but I think we did not overlap for more than 5 bottles. I never even made it to the other side of the room as we were getting bombarded with wine after wine.

To my surprise my favorites were two babies: 2013 von Winning Pechstein and Kirchenstueck. They were so fine and fresh yet powerful and while in many ways having similar qualities also reflected the very different soils they come from. I don't remember trying any GG just months after release that I wanted to take the bottle and just gulp it down. They also came at the right time as a little later I lost completely track of what I was drinking. Not sure how you guys seem to be able to keep it all together.

I tasted those two von Winning wines at the Riesling Reborn seminar and was equally impressed. I will be buying them.

I just looked at the US prices. If you buy a case each you can actually fly into Frankfurt, visit the winery and have a nice meal and still save a few $$.

How much less are they at the cellar door?

Based on current exchange rate they cost about $48 and 55. US I saw between 105 to 120 and 150. 60 to 100$ extra seems a bit steep to me, even considering they were bought at a worse exchange rate.

interesting. TT's catalogue always apologizes for the price. I just assumed that was b:c high cost from the winery. (Which I don't begrudge them. They are expensive to make.)
