Best Pineau d'Aunis I've had

I admittedly am less enthusiastic about this grape than many here, but last night we enjoyed an eye openingly complex and interesting one - la Grappiere Adonis Touraine. Smoke and rocks and Pineau fruit, very interesting. No sulfur, horses in the vineyard, etc. Miraculously fresh out here in Seattle.

Brought in by Owen Kolter here in Seattle, who is just starting up but bringing in some really cool stuff.
 
Interesting. Pd'A is a tough love. I think I like the pink versions the best.

I see Owen Kolter brings in Michel Guignier. Try the Moulin a Vent la Petit Oseille if you see it. VIF may have it. I thought it was fabulous. Stand it up for a bit before drinking, there is a lot of sediment, but the wine is pure.
 
It's always L'Arpent Rouge for me, but I've also occasionally been excited by Verre des Poetes.

I've had some good bottles of Petite Fugue but they've been a little more tannic than what I want from pineau d'aunis.

I drank the Adonis about a year ago and liked it OK.

Did you try the 2012? Preferably with a good steak?

I just double checked. 2012 L'Arpent Rouge is still god wine. Especially with some leftover veal roast.
 
I usually like it in riper years, but have found it tougher in some cooler, leaner vintages.

For example 2007 produced some of my favorite dry chenins whereas I found La Tesnière from that vintage difficult and a little bitter.

But the Loire is a large region and so it's kind of pointless to generalize as such.
 
You haven't tasted one? Everyone's doing it lately, it seems.

But no. Was just saying I loved many Vouvray and Montlouis sec wines from 2007, but found some wines from pineau d'aunis tough in this vintage.

However lurkers have just reminded me that chenin noir and chenin blanc are not believed to be related, so this comparison is mostly meaningless.
 
A bottle of 2013 Clos Roche Blanche rosé tonight confirmed my addiction to it. Grapefruit and blood orange, rocks, and black pepper, with great acidity, it's terrific on its own and even better with food.
 
Two recent bottles of 2011 Verre des Poètes were too funky and not all that enjoyable. Looking online, I see Hérédia sold the domaine last year.
