TN: Table for 8 (March 15, 2015)

attendees: Oswaldo + Marcia + Olivia + Andre + Ben, Don + Melissa, Sharon, Jeff

Table for 8 at the Tribeca abode of Oswaldo e familia. Like being at home, everyone relaxed and friendly (with the possible exception of Ben, who barked himself hoarse at me several times in the evening).

Conversation was well-balanced, perhaps 50% wine and 50% the rest of Life.

Marcia prepared some delicious home-style food:
- Moqueca de Peixe (Brazilian fish stew, enriched with coconut milk and served over rice)
- Mache salad with truffle and pignoli
- Empadão de Frango (Brazilian Chicken Pot Pie, firmer than ours, you can slice it like a quiche)

And while not a jeebus, we did drink a few wines:

Hirtzberger 2001 Riesling Smaragd "Singerriedel" - dry, shapely, sturdy, not an attention-grabbing wine but likable, an SFJoe bottle

Berberana 1952 Rioja Gran Riserva - OMG, gorgeous wine: dreamy red fruit, orange peel, a whiff of earth, and so much depth

Ch. du Hureau 1997 Saumur-Champigny "Lisagathe" - only mildly bell pepper-y, nice mid-weight texture, perhaps a bit closed?

CUNE 1975 Rioja Gran Riserva "Vina Real" - a bit of bottle funk blows off and it's a nice adolescent Rioja, still stretching its legs, but the terroir is recognizable

Pinon 2005 Vouvray "Cuvee Botrytis" - dark gold color, would up tight as a drum, hardly tastes of anything, sigh

Many thanks to our host, and everyone. for a lovely evening.

Delicious dinner, many thanks to all, especially the discreet-but-should-be-world-famous Marcia. How about that chicken tourte.

And that 1952 Berberana!

Glad to see the Berberana showed well. I take it was one of the bottles we sourced? I've only had one of mine and it showed quite nicely.

Yes, that was a bottle I bought through you. Outstanding. Got any more?

Thanks for the notes, Jeff.

Mark, I ain't movin' back, 'twas just a week's sojourn.

Kirk, the Singerriedel was rich, chiseled, precise, bound for glory, but caught way too young, a decade away from prime time. But I wanted to make a toast to Joe, and that was the oldest on hand.

The Berberrana (with two r's) was awesome! Nobody present was from 1952, but Rioja has got to be the ultimate borth year wine.

The 1975 was indeed adolescent, but straplingly so, a treat.

The Hureau was of special substitutional interest for the post-Rougeard era, but seemed too unfriendly, even after all these years; though it smelled lovely.

The 05 Foureau Moelleux was actually a Pinon Cuvée Botrytis, but these short Frenchie names blur at the event horizon. If I open the next before 2025, I swear I'll use a blender to simulate the passage of time.

As Lou can attest, no other vintage could be more apropos than that.

According to cellartrcker, I have two more.

Last night, already back in the subtropics, 2010 La Source du Ruault Saumur-Champigny, part of the quixotic search for CR substitutes. Imported by the boyz, and retailing at the admirable price of $14.99 (at Chambers). Fruit still very primary (duh), cherryesque and earthy. Tastes sappy and juicy, mildly tannic, though a bit of alcohol burn suggests it's closer to 14% than 13% (the label, rather unusually these days, only says 11-14%). While this cuvée won't be substituting CR, the cost/benefit is pause-giving.
