1999 Tardieu-Laurent Cornas Coteaux - France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas (4/21/2015)
This showed much riper than the last one I had. In fact, I gave a glass to the host of the dinner and he commented that he liked it because he doesn't like dry red wine. This was intense red fruit. Balanced and a decent finish. It would be hard to place it as a Cornas.
2010 Roland Lavantureux Chablis - France, Burgundy, Chablis (4/21/2015)
Wonderful nose but the palate didn't seem to match it.
I got sea breeze and minerals on the nose. It was wonderful to smell.
The palate didn't have the zing I want from a Chablis. There were some pleasant nutty flavors, some sharp citrus but nothing very complex. I still enjoyed it. I brought this to a dinner of Mediterranean food where I had nothing in my wine cellar to match the meze. I just brought a wine I would like. I blew up my palate when I ate some pharmaceutical-grade mint so I couldn't follow how the wine evolved. A Kermit Lynch import.
2006 Palari Sicilia Rosso del Soprano - Italy, Sicily, Sicilia (4/14/2015)
Nice wine in good shape. I wished I had snagged more of it. Wonderful nose. Floral. Mostly bright red fruit. Good balance and long finish. It has a velvety texture that stands out. It seemed quite popular at dinner.
2010 Frostwatch Kismet - USA, California, Sonoma County, Bennett Valley (4/14/2015)
Delicious. This is an endorsement from someone who doesn’t normally like sauvignon blanc. White fruit and flowers plus some green apple. Nice length. Fred noticed the slight effervescence. I think it’s time to drink this, though. I brought to try to cheer Robin after she suffered a dog attack. Sauvignon blanc is her favorite white. It was the last sauvignon blanc in my cellar. I like this, the Grey Stack from Bennett Valley and St. Bris from Burgundy, all cooler climate sauvignon blancs.
2002 Calabretta Etna Rosso - Italy, Sicily, Etna DOC (4/10/2015)
Slightly off. I couldn't tell what was wrong. Others detected it. It was drinkable and people generally liked it, but there was something like a mild charcoal flavor to the wine. No one thought it was corked. I brought it as one of two bonus bottles to the wine tasting.
2009 Arianna Occhipinti Nero d'Avola Sicilia Siccagno - Italy, Sicily, Sicilia (4/10/2015)
This showed well. Black fruits on the nose and palate and a streak of violets on the nose. Good balance. It seems like a terrific food wine, but I brought it as a bonus bottle to the wine tasting. Everyone seemed to like it. A Louis/Dressner import.
2010 Oddero Barolo - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo (4/10/2015)
Our bottle must have been a bad bottle. At our tasting everyone hated it and when the $50 price, one of the most expensive wines of the night, was announced, everyone groaned. The nose was terrible. Strong VA plus some odd chemical smell. It didn't show much on the palate. It seemed more modern. This was only opened about an hour or two before we drank it, so maybe it needs a good decant to show well young. I was surprised to see so many enthusiastic notes on CellarTracker! Imported by The Piedmont Guy.
2010 Washoe Pines Gayla - USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley (4/10/2015)
This is a wine from an unbonded winery. The grapes are from Dry Creek Valley but the wine is made just south of Reno.
Not quite a fruit bomb but the wine is on the riper side of the taste spectrum. Mostly dark fruits. The flavor is most intense on the attack. Short finish.
It is made in a style preferred by the late Eric McClary, the guy who created Nevada's most famous beer, Great Basin Brewing Co. Icky.
It was a bonus wine at the wine tasting.
2011 Tenuta Il Palagio Message in a Bottle Toscana IGT - Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT (4/10/2015)
Well, this is why we taste wines blind. This is a wine from a vineyard owned by Sting. It turned out to be my favorite wine of the tasting among seven wines, including the warm up, and it was the group's second favorite. I would have probably been a little biased going in knowing a celebrity was attached to a vineyard. A couple of months ago I tried a shot of Haig Scotch done with affiliation with David Beckham and British music producer Simon Fuller it was definitely DNPIM (do not put in mouth). So I was surprised to find out it has ties to Sting.
This isn't a profound wine. It's not a wine to cellar. But it has nice balance and elegance like a good Beaujolais Village. It's a good food wine.
It's mostly black fruits and some cedar. There's a little bit of a tannic spine I don't usually notice in sangiovese. It may be from the syrah blended in. Good but not great finish. It seems like it was made for restaurant wine lists. Imported by Maritime Wine Trading Collective.
2012 Poderi Elia Langhe Nebbiolo Padrun - Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC (4/10/2015)
Showing well but needs some age. It was my second favorite wine of the night at the tasting the group's favorite. We had several niebbiolo wines but this was the only one to show rose petals and tar. A little big but it still has elegance. Good finish. I would like to try this wine again in six years. Imported by Small Vineyards.
