1997 Scherrer OMV

VLM

VLM
The cork crumbled even though it was only wet at the bottom, so no mistreatment. Fully mature but still with a nice ruby color. Dried berries and spice box, gentle across the palate without heat or distraction. This doesn't have anywhere to go and may have been better a couple of years ago with more vigor, but it is a lovely, mature zinfandel.

People had recommended Scherrer to me for over a decade before I finally tried one and wondered why I had waited so long. Though a lot has to do with the lack of east coast retail presence.

Not the snickers of East Coast hipsterdom?

To the extent that folks here represent the apex of east coast hipsterdom, Scherrer gets a lot of respect in these pages (as any search will reveal).

The east coast hipsters I've opened them for have been fans. Mr. Coad was a particular admirer one dinner at the late lamented Soul Flavors.

sorry, I'm tearing up a bit...

PS - I'm hoping that calling him a hipster will draw him out of hiding.

It's been been awhile, hasn't it?

I only mentioned the hipster quotient because I know zinfandel gets a bad rap for being big and brawny, not green and acidic which most wines here aspire to. Really the best way to get the Scherrer on this side of the country is to go the futures route.
