TN: JBL Visit (May 10, 2015)

Jeff Grossman

attendees: JBL, Lynn, Brad, Jeff, Jayson, Jay & Arnold, Don & Melissa

Peking Duck House. Honestly, the peking duck is pretty good. They also do a few good standard Chinese dishes -- green beans with ground pork, beef with black mushrooms. So, it's not the Four Seasons.

Anyway, JBL is in town for a visit and there are a lot of us so....

Weingut Alfred Merkelbach 2014 Urziger Wurzgarten Riesling Spatlese - tangy, young, and non-descript

La Stoppa 2004 "Ageno" - it's still orange; it's gained in complexity and shed a little of the late-arriving bitterness, but still eh

Dom. Foillard 2007 Morgon "Cuvee 3.14" - "very bright cherry nose" -Jayson

Weingut Willi Schaefer 2007 Graacher Domprobst Riesling Spatlese - 2 583 154 12 08, alc 8%, gentle and yummy

Lauer 2011 Riesling "Schonfels" "Fass 11" "Steillage" "Handgelessen" - 3 501 073 14 12, nose is kinda ordinary but the palate is amazing: green grapes at first, give way to apricots then to bitter orange and finlly to something like slate; Jayson and Brad complain about the moderate acidity

Dom. des Baumard 1996 Savenniere "Clos du Papillon" - spoiled

Dom. Sylvie Spielmann 2012 Gewurztraminer "Reserve Bergheim" - "too alcoholic" -Jay, and that's being nice to it

ESJ 2005 "Rocks & Gravel" - tight and vaguely lactic early on, then cherry pie and rhubarb; on Day 3, this is very generous, warm and red-fruity

Montevertine 2005 IGT - a year in which Pergole Torte fruit was declassified into the regular bottling, great acidity, bright cherry, a wow wine; on Day 3, it's still holding back a little

Le Vieux Donjon 1998 Chateauneuf-du-Pape - excellent, good acidity, like sweetened cranberry, but in a good winey way

Druet 1995 Bourgueil "Grand Mont" - corked or otherwise spoiled

Druet 1995 Bourgueil "Vaumoreau" - this is beautiful, layered aromatics, minimum of green pepper

Allegrini 2007 Amarone della Valpolicella Classico - hot and tannic, no wonder this didn't get opened till its sixth outing

Racist!

Thanks for the notes, Jeff. A fun night and great to see Jason and Lynn again.

I thought the real stars of the night were the Schaefer, Montevertine, Vieux Donjon and Foillard, in that order. My last bottle of '96 Clos Papillon and a shame it was premoxed, as that wine has largely shown for the past ten years. On release and for a few years afterwards, it, as well as the Closel, was a benchmark Savennieres.
