2011 Overnoy Poulsard

Valerie was in town slinging wine, so I met up with her at Rue Cler to taste through what she was showing (including a very nice 2014 Gruner from Ott with all sorts of declassified juice in it). After obligations had been met, she wanted to get a snack and a bottle of wine. Being from NY, of course she ordered the last bottle we had of Overnoy Poulsard. It was its normal, pale, lovely self. It blew off a bit of bottle funk/reduction within a few minutes. Lovely herbs, berries, florals in the nose and graceful and wispy across the palate. Gossamer as Coad would say. I remember when this was a lovely $20 wine to drink on a Tuesday and not think about it. Now you have to fly down from NY to the country just to drink it at a reasonable price. Well, I charged her full price, because fuck NYers pillaging our shit, but it was a nice end to the day.

What about former NYers, now DCers, coming down to pillage? Slight discount to current NYers?

In any case, the 2011 is lovely. I prefer this type of lighter vintage for Overnoy Ploussard to, say, the 2009, where the wine looks more like Beaujolais and has more weight.

I had the opportunity to try the 2012 a couple of months ago. Very different from the last few vintages, less sweetness to the fruit and a lot more structure than has recently been the case. It is going to need a little time, I think.

This is a bullshit move that I doubt most real NYers would pull. A real NYer would order your Overnoy and Clos Rougeard....oh wait!
