Jeebus in Wash DC, 8/24

Larry Stein

Larry Stein
I'll be in the area to help my daughter settle in at American University. Any interest in jeeb'ing on one of those evenings? I'm not sure which it will be yet. I'll know after American sends the activities schedule in early June.

I have posted here, as well as the Jeebus page, because as we all know, no one reads the Jeebus page.

By daughter you mean Shira? Who just recently was sitting at jeebus events patiently coloring in her books! Now she's probably going to host her own jeebus once Larry leaves town.

We're all getting old!

We will be back in the US again and ready to participate. I'll also be celebrating not going back to work at AU that week.

Just that week or have you transitioned?

I am now officially retired and thus part of the gainfully unemployed. Since, at least at the moment, I'm still doing scholarship, though, I am also a member of the ungainfully employed, I guess.

Yay, more time for you and Gail to enjoy life to the fullest, without pesky students to corral and lasso.

Congratulations! Of course, Shira had to look up what you were a professor of. She's going to double major in Journalism and Biochem (she got admitted to the Honors College, too) so most likely, she never would've taken one of your classes.

Jonathan and Keith, any suggestions as to what hotel(s) nearby I should consider? AU's website has a laundry list of places, but personal recommendations are always better. I'm just looking for your basic, clean inn. I won't be spending much time in the room. Free wi-fi is always a bonus.

There are a few hotels around Friendship Heights - Marriott Courtyard Chevy Chase and the Embassy Suites (in the same complex as Range, which has a very disorderly-friendly wine list). That's all I can think of. They are just about 5 minutes from campus and probably cheaper than going deeper into downtown.

Also the marriot woodley park sort of close. None of these walking distance as AU is in a very residential neighborhood.

I booked a room at Savoy Suites. Best rate from the list and it's the closest to AU. Savoy also provides a free shuttle to and from the Metro.

Thanks for the suggestions!

And just down the street from my temporary one-BR abode.

Maureen, is there a good breakfast/brunch place nearby? Shira and I are gonna need to fuel up before dealing with college stuff on Sat and Sun.

She and I are looking at more moderate/casual places for dinner. Estadio DC gets a lot of positive notes, especially on Chowhound. Unless you (and the other locals) give a thumbs-down, Cashion's Eat Place and DGS Delicatessen looked interesting. Other recommendations are cheerfully accepted!

We get lots of journalism students in our lit. classes. And there's always Gen.Ed. lit. classes. She could have hunted me down if she had wanted to. I wouldn't have suggested it, though. Congratulations on her getting into the Honors College. They are building some really interesting interdisciplinary classes.

We put visiting speakers and job candidates up at Savoy suites all the time. It's a perfectly good place and reasonable.

For me, Cashions has been disappointing since the chef owner sold years ago. perhaps things have changed though.
