Texier Chat Fou

I had Eric's bottling of Texier Cote du Rhone Chat Fou '12 this evening for the first time.

What a delightful wine. Just the slightest hint of heat that seemed to give the wine a desirable element of nimbleness and vitality, nice freshness and roundness, nothing not to like, and very quaffable.

There is usually a story to Eric's label and naming choices. Is this the case with Chat Fou?

And what's the blend of the bottling?

It worked very well with venison sausage, garbanzo beans, cornbread dressing, and spinach.

Absent information here, I found this elsewhere...

Assemblage : 50% Grenache, 15% Carignan, 15% Cinsault, 10% Marsanne et 10% Roussanne

No wonder it is so quaffable!

The only real surprise is I thought, after tasting, that there might be at least a smidgeon of Syrah. But it is not missed.

'12 is 85% 50 years old grenache from Saint Julien en Saint Alban on granitic soil and 15% of white grapes (blend of clairette and marsanne). 15 months in concrete. Or something like that.
The northern most grenaches that are grown in France I think. Picked at 19 brix I use white that are a bit over ripe by the time we pick the grenache to make a "natural" chaptalization.

Chat Fou is one of our cat who probably doesn't know he is a cat. I have no idea what he thinks he is though. May some kind of rabbit.

Cheers

Eric, thanks!

What you have done here with Grenache shows how appealing and food-friendly Grenache-based wines can be. I've never understood those folks who naysay the allure that Grenache wines and blends can have.

I had this recently at Vif (where I had the pleasure of meeting and tasting with Eric) and had felt the same thing - it is a terrific, old school wine.
