$t. Hune

Florida Jim
After three bottles of oxidized 1999 Clos St. Hune, I finally got a sound one. I figure, at today's prices, the good one cost me $800 (4 x 200).
It wasn't that good . . .
Best, Jim

Drank an excellent 1985 last night with the Doghead himself! Double wow!

Glad to hear that Goatboy is still out and about aND drinking well.

It's affected '90 and later, as you know, Mo.

I tried the 'brand new' 2007 Schoelhammer Riesling from Hugel last month. Just opened, it came across very good (rich but mineral etc etc) but hard to gauge in a big tasting. Similar pricing I think. Marketing bullshit?
Any other views?

I do not understand why you always feel the need to act as if I am unaware of this issue simply because i report a favorable experience. I do not doubt the existence of premox with CSH (or Huet) nor do i think others on this board are mistaken when they report bad bottles.

Well, this is the first time I can recall you acknowledging that a problem exists, Mo. Every time we've spoken about it, or a thread comes up on it, You say you've never experienced premox in them and you usually just add a nice note on one to the conversation, as you did here.

Since Maureen declares she acknowledges the issue and Brad says he acknowledges the theoretical possibility of sound bottles, this is no longer a real argument.

If Robert and Carolyn are still in DC, say hi to them for me.

Never really got CSH - 3,4,5x the price of CFE and not that much better in my experience. Folks keep telling me I just havent compared them with enough age. Perhaps.

A recently opened 1989 CFE was in decent shape - some signs of oxidation, but not pox levels.

Sharon is right. We also had an 89 CFE - in great shape - alongside and the comparison was interesting. The CSH was very very light in color and almost delicate yet long. The CFE was darker -but not oxidised - and richer more tropical in flavors. And no, this was not the VT. It was one of the many bottles in cole's stash acquired during a Sam's dump many moons ago. The hune was from my cellar - a gift years ago from a friend - also at the dinner - who had one from the cellar of an Idaho resort where he'd previuosly worked whe a student and asked to buy the remaining bottle (underpriced because the resort had bought it on release and had not price-adjusted), which he then gave to me. So great storage on both bottles. And apples to mangos.

What breed of mango? If it's a lousy Tommy Atkins then it's a bad comparison.

There are always sound bottles with premox, Jonathan. That's part of what makes it maddening.

I believe they returned to RI yesterday and your absences were noted. It turns out that Carolyn has a regular visit to DC in mid June so you may want to adjust your schedule accordingly...

The 89 CFE has always been mango-y, though the sweetness has declined a bit over time. I did mention to Robert that .sasha had noted (years ago) that some 85 CSH had a less than intense flavor, a point that Robert disputed. The 85 had been widely available on the market at low prices I think due to a change in importer...perhaps the Trimbachs could have another importer change to allow some of us to restock.

I did? Don't recall. I will maintain however that there are two 85s out there, and that they are unmarked (which is different from 1975 and 1981 when some of the VV was bottled separately and secret label codes allegedly exist). My wild theory, based on tasting, is that there was an aborted VT in 1985, but unlike in 1990 when the VT was uniformly blended into the main dry cuvee, it was either not blended, or blended non-uniformly. These bottles remain somewhat grumpy, but generally appear to require more time than your "basic" 1985 CSH.
