Help us, "Resveratrol" Mark

Well, not sure what "Mark" you want to answer, but I'll say moderation -- in everything -- is probably a good game plan, baring other variables.

Jeff,
The link between alcohol and cancer has been known for quite a while, so as usual there is more smoke than fire in this "new" study. Within that constraint, however, red wine is clearly not as bad for you as other forms of alcohol because of resveratrol and other polyphenolics that have demonstrated anti-cancer activities. Whether they balance out, or where that balance may lie, is unknown and probably varies from individual to individual.

On another note, I've been doing some reading on dietary changes that lower LDL levels and red wine also shows definite benefits (about 8% reduction in LDL levels). Curiously, dealcoholized red wine shows no such benefits, so go figger.

As Mark says, I'm a firm believer in the benefits of moderation.

I thought I was a really witty SOB when I came up with "even moderation is only good in moderation." Then I found out that Samuel Clemens said it a long time before I did. Silly bunt.

"Torremolinos, torremolinos"

My mother always told me I should eat my variables. Now I find out she was some kind of sick bastard.

This deserved a much bigger laugh.

I fucking loved it, but sometimes one worries about being too much the sycophant. Lord knows, we don't want a "Like" button here, and I refuse to laugh in acronyms.

Some people laugh through their teeth, goodness sakes, hissing and fizzing like snakes.

New research shows that resveratrol changes the behavior of the immune system in complex ways, both increasing the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and decreasing the ability of neutrophils: news release.

Are these good things or bad things or one of each?

Not easily categorized, but neutrophils fight infections, so a decrease in neurtrophil activity should hurt your ability to fight infectious diseases, but the rise in pro-inflammatory cytokines can both help fight infections and increase your risk for heart disease, cancer and autoimmune diseases. More research is definitely needed on this one.
