TN: one bottle in the cellar

Scherrer 1994 Zinfandel "Old and Mature Vines" - aka, "OMV". The cork crumbled in six different directions so I decanted. A whiff of bottle funk blew off in less than 5 minutes and then it was gorgeous. Dark purple-black in the decanter but when poured you can see orange glints in the glass. Plenty of acidity and the tannins have all melted or broken down into teeny little bits so they have become part of the fabric of the wine. If you pay attention you can still find the variety's famous blackberry flavor but it's no longer prominent. I can see why old Zin is sometimes take for old Cab. And the wine has a long finish. That was a good one.

I hid the bottle and made other folks in the cellar play "What's My Grape?". Guesses ranged from dornfelder to nebbiolo. Do I need new friends?

Other things drunk recently:

O. Horiot 2009 Rose des Riceys "En Valingrain" - still rose from Champagne with a great back-story that includes Louis XIV; substantial presence, tannic, slightly bitter finish

Abbatucci 2012 "Rouge Frais" - pleasant but not more (just as it was in 2014, too), the better bottlings cost a lot more though

Cantalupo 2006 Ghemme "Anno Primo" - not as good as that Breclemae in 2011 but savory and rich, I enjoyed it

Olivier. Original note edited. Thanks.

The wine was very good and, I think, would reward more attention.

Same issue with some bottles of the 1997, the cork just crumbles. The 1997 is lovely, although I wouldn't confuse it with cabernet. Maybe, maybe, some sort of Southern Rhône, but it really just seems like mature zinfandel to me.
