Bordelet Poiré Granit

So... after hearing so much about this perry over the years but never actually taking the adequate steps to have some around, I wandered into Astor Wines on the way to the farmers' market yesterday. The cider section there has some interesting things, and this was marked down by nearly $10 (still making it a $30 bottle of pear juice), so I went for it.

Later on, I cut myself some duck proscuitto (what are you supposed to eat with perry, anyway? I mean, other than crêpes) and poured myself a glass.

It was an interesting thing, more complex than its attack presaged. But as I sat with the glass (and switched to roasted cashews to pair), I got quickly bored. I had trouble finishing one glass of it.

So, the rest of the bottle is in my fridge, and I will give it another taste today.

Anyone have any thoughts about this? I've never been a huge Bordelet fan; the ciders seem a little too clean/anonymous. But I'd be curious to hear others' weighings-in.

Reduce it and pour over ice cream.

Simmer quince in it for several hours and do whatever you might with quinces (and the liquid, which will firm-up nicely).

Used to be around $18, as well.
This, I've never seen it for more than $20.
Drank it once and it worked in a sort of delicious holiday vein (it was Christmas). Never gave it another thought.

I'm starting to suspect they artificially raised the price before offering their substantial "discount." Sigh.

Did you buy any?...

Nope. Although I sort of want a mag for Thanksgiving.

They float around. They had some recently at Back Label Wine Merchants in the Flatiron neighborhood. I've seen large formats at Passage de la Fleur, as well, but that was longer ago.

A guy was a hit at a recent rooftop party by bringing mags of same. Everyone wanted to be that guy's friend.
