NWR: Side argument - Jonathan Franzen, great or shit?

I am right now completing The Maze at Windermere, which was a Christmas present from my wife. I'm enjoying it quite a bit but will reserve further comment until I've completed it.

Trying to remember a quote from an Elizabethan play I read in high school (may have been Marlowe or Webster, not necessarily the Bard) which says that a sovereign is like the source of a river; if he is virtuous the river is flows clear and if he is not the river is poisoned or muddied, something to that effect. Does this ring a bell for anyone with better memory?
