The Buddy McGirt of Riesling

Michael G. Hanchard

Michael G. Hanchard
Years ago, a boxing trainer and commentator described former world junior middleweight champion James Buddy McGirt as " as good as a fighter can be without being great". Fair or not, this description applies to wines which, while not the best representation of their appellation or varietal, nevertheless provide joy and pleasure as reminders of why you prefer certain wines and grapes more than others. Such is the case with 20012 Poggiobello Riesling from Colli Orientali del Friuli. While it does not have the intensity of a vineyard designation Alsatian Riesling, nor the Gothic structure of an Austrian Smaragd, the Poggiobello nevertheless reveals its Hapsburg heritage in the combination of minerality, lemon grass, chamomile and a slightly honeyed flavors on the palate. Federspiel and Kamptal come to mind, but with Friuli's vivacity. Loosely wound, this wine is not a long term ager, to be enjoyed over the next 2-3 years.

Salute!!

Variety, not varietal! Mars an otherwise good note.

No, I actually meant varietal. I have never visited Mars, so you will have to tell me about your trip sometime.

Now you are being a dick. You are pretty new to the board, so as the Italians say "piss lower."

Variety is the noun, varietal the adjective. I know you know that.

So both you and Mr, costa are from mars. Let's see how brave you are when we meet. I generally don't respond to comments like this, but I am interested in wine, not pissing contests.

It seems the baton needs to be sharper than usual in this case. For future reference, when you have been corrected by one of this board's resident Miss Grundys, you stay corrected, unless you can out-pedant them. So far, you haven't managed.

Some humor at least. For what it's worth, I meant to write "varietal character", but no one else knew that, so fair enough. I was responding to the rudeness accompanying the correction and in subsequent comments. Mr.Costa, thanks for the funny picture of one of my favorite characters. I have been forewarned.
