There are way too many places to know what would suit you, but,
For something a little off the usual tourist beaten path.....
Lilette or Coquette on Magazine. Coquette is doing some really good stuff with local ingredients. Lilette is a local favorite, kinda UTR.
Domilise's out Annunciation for as good an oyster Poboy as you can get. Mahoney's Poboys, Magazine St, are really good, too.
Gautreau's near the corner of Soniat and Daneel has been a bright spot for years. Fresh takes on French and Louisiana cuisine.
I've loved Galatoire's for decades. My mom and I used to take the train from Jackson to New O in the morning, have lunch at Galatoire's, and hang out in the quarter til the train went back in late afternoon. I took the family there about 15 years ago when my daughter was about 10. The waiter was taking orders and came around to her, asked her what she wanted, and she said,"I don't see what I want on the menu." "Well what is it that you want?" "I want some fried chicken." "That's not a problem. We'll fry some chicken for you, darlin'." Don't expect inventive cuisine, but old school stuff is usually done to perfection. And they pour a damn fine drink.
Just a word of advice: Take taxis point to point outside the Quarter, at night in particular.

Nine of us upstairs at Coquette Friday. I gave up a res at Lilette for it. Good looking list at latter.

agree on Herbsaint. They had a great South African SB on the list. But does no one go to Upperline anymore?

Back from a trip to New Orleans.
The Commander's wine list was indeed the most impressive. A bottle of 2011 De Moor Saint Bris went well with the food. Our waiter said they refer to the off-list wine list as the Grape Nuts list and that's it's offered during the summer when they're sorting through the cellar.
We preferred the food at Brigtsen's - the food highlight of the trip - although the wine list there is more limited. A 2010 Stony Hill Chardonnay worked. Clancy's was also very good and atmospheric. And we liked the backyard at Bacchanal even if the food was more hit-or-miss and other diners seemed not to care about the jazz trio.
