2012 Texier Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban Vieille Serine

This is such a lovely wine. I have had it open since it called out to me for a glass on Tuesday evening. I can't wait to run home to it tonight and see where it is, as it waits.

I was afraid it might be closed, but it wasn't. So lucky to have this to drink.

Interesting. Mine was very open and appealing right from the start.

On a separate note, I've also recently really enjoyed the (new?) Saint-Julien-en-Saint-Alban Vieille Marsanne (after having always had a "thing" for the Vieille Roussette). It's more aromatic than the latter, but it's really well-balanced.

I've had a few bottles since the beginning of the year, and they have all been good, but they have also fluctuated from bottle to bottle in their willingness to please right away. Such is wine.

Anyone have a proper age to consume these at? I bought a few of the 2010 and had opened one soon after purchase and found it full of gobby lobs of fruit that so covered the structure that was there that I put them away. But now I wonder when should I revisit?

That depends on what you look for out of your N Rhone Syrah, doesn't it? Do you love the exuberance of fresh fruit that you get in young Syrah, or do you want the ethereal aromaticity of near-senescent Syrah or something in between. Me, I'm sticking with BJ's rule of 15, but as I've said before here I'm a noted oenogerontophile.

The 2011 has never stopped being delicious. I don't remember the last time I had the 2010.

Eric, would I be an idiot to open a magnum tomorrow?

haven't had the 2011 recently. 2010 was good but still really young 2 weeks ago from bottle. Probably better from magnum since I bottle them by hand (more oxygen) and they usually don't go thru the weird phase around 3/4 years unlike bottles. But they reach their peak later, like '08 really nice now from bottle still too structured from magnum for my taste.

Thanks. That 2008 this summer was really nice (of Brezeme was there St.J-St.A?).

Lovely bottle of the 2012 St Julien tonight. Succulent, suave, gentle and delicate. Especially good at dinner with the side dish of sauteed fennel and olives. But an all around fine time throughout the night.

At this point I don't even care how it will age, I need delicious stuff to drink now, and this more than qualifies!

Pretty straightforward. Cut up fennel, cut kalamata olives off the pit and into small slices. Sautee together. Sometimes I'll finish by deglazing with a vinegar, but in this case we also had a rather tart carrot salad so I didn't, and just finished with black pepper. And that may have made an even better match with the wine.
