TN: 05 P. Roty Bourgogne Aligote

Classic hairspray aligote elements, some caramel (not oxidized), creamed honey in nose. Nice acidity and lift, repeating elements with good minerality, fine caramels. Just a tad flinty too, and a hint of mulling spices. Nice balance for an 05 - at first I felt this a little ponderous, but the acids match up and it's ok. This is quite good. This strikes me as quite old vines.

I would put this up quality wise with any aligote I've had, including Lafarge.

I had a wallop of Lafarge Aligote a while ago - 02 vintage, I think. Several bottles, and I was not much taken with it, though I wanted to be. Is this the benchmark? I thought Villaine was tops.

Yeah, I was surprised to. Didn't list on CT or through Google, either. But here it is. Junguenet importation.

Definitely no new wood.

I have only had the raisin d'ores Lafarge, truth be told. The 02 is superb, not topped since. I'd like to try the regular but Dieter doesn't get it here in Seattle.

Must we rank order them?

Paging Joe Perry.

I take your point, Joe. But I didn't so much mean that as, rather, to query whether saying "this wine is better than Lafarge's Aligote" really means it's very good Aligote at all, in a tactful kind of way.

And when it comes to tact, I'd put myself up against Andy Raffles any day.

Thanks!

Not everyone's crazy about Aligote. I tend to wax and wane. As much as anything, I have a tough time pairing it at times. I mostly like it as an aperitif.

I've only tasted a few, but the best of these was easily the de Villaine Bouzeron, followed by the De Moor Plantation 1902.
