Dinner at Racines with the Kesslers

Very belated but I just came across what passes for my notes, many of which were illegible. I post it mainly for the classic quote from Brad which I put at the end.

Food was quite good at Racines though service was annoyingly spotty. First they decided to give us a set menu without telling us and we had to have them change it to match the wines we brought. Then despite the fact that I kept saying that Arnold was arriving late at 8pm they kept trying to clear his place setting and neither brought and left the earlier courses for him nor brought more food when he arrived so he only got 2 courses.

2005 Rudi Pichler Wosendorfer Hochrain Gruner Veltliner Smaragd
Rich, maybe a little heavy, white pepper, nice spreeners?

1999 Nikolaihof Steiner Hund Spatlese
Amazingly vibrant on the palate, electric nose, probably WOTN for me

1999 Brundlmayer Zobinger Heiligenstein Riesling

2005 Selbach Oster Zeltinger Schlossberg Riesling Auslese
Very rich and honeyed though not especially sweet. Also a little heavy

1973 Lopez de Heredia Tondonia Grand Reserva
Very good, a bit funky

1985 Il Colle Brunello
Nose was a little over the hill but what great acidity. Beautiful wine, fantastic with the lamb. Faded quickly (I had double decanted before bringing it) and unfortunately I kept trying to pass it but everyone else's glasses were full. By the time it went around it had fallen apart. I know Manuel and possibly Lisa got a pour while it was good.

1985 Mouton
Seamless depth, great

2001? Biondi Santi Riserva
Very young, pure lovely nose. Needs time

1993 Chandon de Briailles Corton Clos du Roi
My only note says it's a horrible match with the sweetbreads but improved in the glass. I have a vague recollection of a lovely lightweight wine.

1995 Joguet Dioterie

Quote of the night from Brad:
"Brains taste good but I can't wrap my head around them." We know Brad, we know...

That Steiner Hund was really nice. But so was the Mouton. A tie, I say.

Those two were part of my top three. There was also a terrific '08 Foreau Moelleux. Jay also forget a decent '83 Rieussec and an off bottle of '99 Jamek- Riesling Ried Klaus.

A fun night. Always great to welcome Lou and BettyLu back to the Big Apple, a tradition that goes back fifteen years now. Also, a big thank you to them for treating the whole group to dinner! Most generous.
