2011 Henri Gouges "Les Vaucrains" last night was one of those wines that reaffirms why I chase challenging wines of quality. i won't even attempt a tasting note. just spectacular.

astonishing that this was available on closeout from a distributor. this wine is hard to sell? really? makes me want to go into the business.

anyway, if you see it, buy it. ill bury the rest of mine for years.

Always great to hear about a delicious and accessible Gouges. In theory I would buy more of the wines. (Although that is easy to say)

There are all sorts of wines that sit on the shelves for no good reason.

It's a terrible business, more of a public service, really.

Exactly! You DON'T go into this business because wines like this languish. But you will drink well. My Gouges thing these days is Pinot Blanc. I find the grape more fascinating than I ever imagined.

these were languishing at the distributor level. the shop i got this at consistently gets close out pricing on wines that i just can't believe their sales people can't sell. and not just high end stuff that may not appeal to everyone.
this summer i got a ridiculous deal on eric's "chat fou" cote du rhone. and 2010 "vieille serine"
it was like stealing. i actually felt guilty.

The big issue for us with closeouts is that the folks who end up needing to close out tend to not have good storage. They move boxes and beer so don't really care (although I think they store their kegs cold, ironically).

Tried buying some Vineyard Brands stuff on closeout and had to send it back.

Yeah, vines from 1989, natural fermentation in old oak, ML, on the lees a year and no filtering. Same way I make Chard, both grapes picked early for good acidity. I really like the approach.

Yeah, vines from 1989, natural fermentation in old oak, ML, on the lees a year and no filtering. Same way I make Chard, both grapes picked early for good acidity. I really like the approach.

That's great. I am a big fan of PB from OR. I've got a bottle of your PN from Envoyer. Maybe they'll have your PB some time.
