Cornelissen Magma 5R (2006) & others at Roberta's

I was very curious to see how this has held up over time. I stopped buying Magma because of the steady price increases and I like the lower wines so much more, especially for near-term drinking.

Well this wine was fantastic. Despite a very hot vintage it was light and energetic with complexity and depth. It continued to get better over a 3 hour period. I don't know where this will go from here. I think it could age for another 10-20 years I just don't know if it will get better.

Lucky for me I ran into some friends at Roberta's that had planned a wine dinner and had a few cancellations. Luckily I had the Magma with me and ordered the J.B. off the list.

04 Fourrier Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers was fantastic

84 Domain Trévallon - was going strong with lots of leather and good funk

76 J.B. Becker Rasenthaler Steinmächer Spatlese - Outstanding

00 Mugnier Les Fuées - not quite as good as the Fourrier but still nice

13 Weisler-Kunstler Gaispfad - Acid! I love 13 Germans and in particular this wine. It is amazing how well high acid Riesling goes with pizza.

96 Leflaive Puligny Montrachet Les Combettes - Drinking very well. Some thought the nose was showing a tad too much wood I thought it was fine.

05 Bernard Van Berg Le vin Le plus simplement - Sadly this was corked. Yet I could still tell it was a very good wine underneath.

I have done the same thing and find many good matches. Mainly because I like riesling and I like pizza. Although the cultural dissonance can be jarring if one thinks too hard about it. (As with another of my staples, red Burgundy and pizza)
