White and red at Bar Boulud

Out of town friends, Lincoln Center eventual destination, request for my company for a glass or few —> Bar Boulud and the stellar hospitality of Mr. Michael Madrigale.

The big bottle glass pour was a young Australian shiraz, but wouldn't you know it, it was only 6pm and they were already out, so I unfortunately have nothing to report on that front. (He swears it is a lovely drink, with good acidity.)

Instead, we had a bottle of:

2012 Goisot Côtes d'Auxerre "Corps de Garde" Blanc - I really, really like the Goisot wines, and this chipper little north Burgundy chardonnay punched above its weight class. It had a lot of complexity and a pleasing, low-key Burgundianness. Got better with time, though we didn't have much of the latter.

And so, not having any shiraz for us, Michael M. came back around with kindly offered pours from a large bottle of:

2010 Foillard 3.14 - And what can one say, except that both of my friends were startled and charmed by this, and I had to do a lot of back story about what this was and why it was like this. And I liked it, too. It was open, inviting, and had great length. Oh, yeah, sometimes I do like Beaujolais.

i've gone through several bottles of 2011 goisot gueules du loup (throat of the wolf?) cotes d'auxerre [chardonnay] and every bottle has batted way above its pedigree. clearly premier cru quality.

really impressive stuff. neal martin did a great write-up on the estate back in september.

Of course I love Foillard, and the generally high level of excellence can be good for the casual wine folks. Although I imagine you were aided by the extra weight in the 3.14 bottling (which casual wine folks tend to appreciate). Tonight I took the 2013 CdP to dinner with friends and they seemed to like it, but I kept fearing that it was not weighty enough for them.
