2011 Texier St Julien en St Alban Vieille Serine

I was put off by a somewhat stern bottle of this 2011 back in September and spent most of the fall drinking the 2012, which is just a bit rounder and juicier and easier to please.

But, I had a bottle of this on Christmas and the deep dark layers were very very nice and very attractive. Power, richness and elegance. Lovely.

I'd sort of taught myself to keep my hands of my Texiers for the first few years. I've been drinking 05 Brezeme with pleasure these days. All these notes for 4-5 year old ones have me thinking I should try some more recent ones.

To each his own. I'm hardly an expert but I've been saving the Brezemes longer and drinking the St Juliens younger.

In an ideal world I'd like to have more aged stocks of each, but I find the St Juliens showing pretty well younger, while something about the acid structure in the Brezeme seems to call out for more age.

So that's what I've been doing. Although things may change.

I hadn't thought of the St. Juliens as being earlier drinkers than the Brezemes.

It does run counter to the notion that St Julien is Texier's equivalent of Cornas. But it has worked in my house for the past few vintages.
