So, the author did not find her meals worth it at any of Per Se, EMP, Chef's Table at Brooklyn Fare, or Masa. Just to calibrate the discussion a bit, is there a restaurant in NYC that she does think is worth it?

On a more serious note, lately I've been hearing grumblings from non-New-York food friends about the pricing in New York restaurants. I've never noticed, unless something is really steep. I consider dining out a luxury in any case, so it costs what it costs (within reason). Am I wrong?

compared to where else? eating out here is much cheaper than in London and a bit more than Chicago; as are rents and the needs, given the cost of living, of the people who work in the restos. Repeat with more emphasis for Portland, OR, Chapel Hill, NC, Austin, TX, etc. As a gross generalization, I find the prices (when comparing comparable places and neighborhoods) in SF to be about the same as here. Although I never eat any more at the high end in SF, but one hears that Benu & Saison don't take a back seat to anybody in NY re price --at least not in a meaningful way.
That said, i know for a fact that one can find relatively low cost good meals in SF, NYC, Rome, Torino, and even Copenhagen.
