Funny you should post this, as I took a picture of their sign too, after driving a half mile past on that winding road while saying to myself "I know it's before Skyline!"

This makes me smile. Did you ever drive up with a speed freak?

Sure. I had a Triumph GT6 Coupé in college (but really wanted a bug eye Sprite) so I'm guessing some of my earliest trips in the 70s were demon-like. It was really wonderful tasting with Paul Draper and we met Dave Bennion (a friend from UCDavis had worked there in the 70s).

I also brought back Nebbiolo cuttings from Piemonte in the late 70s that Ridge grafted at the Monte Bello Vineyard; I'm not really sure what became of them, but everyone thought that the variety might have interesting potential at that site. The old low-alcohol cabernets from MBV are by far my favorite California wines, even now.

That's so interesting.

And I agree about the older Monte Bellos. My first California wine was a 1987 MB about nine years ago, brought to Paris by friends from Atlanta. Eye-opening and unforgettable. 11.7% abv.
