Mark and Maureen, The Henri Gouges Nuits St Georges Clos de Porrets '10 was by far the wine of the evening for me. It was just superb.
Fortunately for me, the wine steward is friendly and realized that I was not interested in the Dominus and Champagne and not too interested in the Rieussec and, as a result, kept pouring the Burgundy for me to cover my passing on the other wines. This Nuits St Georges, besides excelling with the guinea hen, worked very well with the antelope and cheese courses as well...and even kept my interest during the dessert course.
The Gouges was truly marvelous with the caveat, as I discussed with the wine steward, it would be really special to enjoy it again in 20 years. As good as it was on this occasion, it has the underpinnings to make even greater old bones.
Gouges is a special producer in Nuits St Georges. His Nuits St Georges wines are qualitatively way above many (most?) of the other producers in this region.
Thanks for your two postings as they provided the impetus for me to expound a bit (or maybe more than "a bit"!).
